Feed America's hungry (and their pets), says nonprofit group
(CNN) -- Food banks across the country kicked into high gear for the holiday season this week in an effort to feed America's hungry. But a few instead homed in on an often overlooked casualty of hard times -- the family pet.
"It's the forgotten pets that go by the wayside," said Ann King, founder of an Atlanta-based nonprofit group called Save Our Pets Food Bank.

I wanted to tell you what a difference you have made in my life over the last 3 months with the help from Save Our Pets Food Bank. I am a widow on social security and I have 6 dogs and 5 cats. I know that seems like a lot, but each and everyone of them have their own special place in my heart. My oldest dogs are close to 10 and the youngest are 6 years old. I have had them all since they were babies or close to it. I have always made do with my budget and have always taken the best care of my animals and been able to do it without too much difficulty.
Three months ago my adult daughter and her children had to move in with me due to being layed off her job of five years due to the economy. While I would never ever have it any other way, I was strapped suddenly with new costs and finding it very difficult to to have the money to buy enough pet food. I found your organization on the web and came to your place one Saturday morning and I must tell you I cried with deep gratitude all the way home. I was terrified to get to a place where I couldn't take care of my family and by family I mean all of us. You guys have made it possible for me to keep my animal family while still helping with my children and grandchildren.
My daughter is activily searching for work and I know God willing that a door will open soon for her, but if it were not for you I don't know how I could have continued to care for my animals. My animals saved my life when my husband died unexpectantly from cancer 5 years ago. They were loyal, patient and just loving me back to life and my goal in life will always be to there for them no matter what happens in life and you have allowed me to do this.
Once again, I can not begin to describe the gratitude I have for you and your organization.
These donations are made to Save Our Pets Food Bank.org from the Muggins' Miracles Project. The residents of Garden Hills generously gave of their time and money to provide for animals in need.
Muggins' Miracles is named after Muggins, our little black pug who passed away in April '09 at the age of 18. She was a sweet, loving little dog who spent the last three years of her life in a doggie wheelchair, bravely surviving several strokes and partial paralysis. She was and always will be our precious angel and we are so proud to honor her through the Muggins' Miracles Project.
We would like to make our donations in loving memory of Muggins and our beloved Mr. Jiggs.
